Central High School Cancels Varsity Football for Second Straight Year

Central High School in Springfield, Missouri, has officially canceled its varsity football season for the second consecutive year due to low player participation and safety concerns.

Administrators from Springfield Public Schools announced the decision for the 2026 season after realizing the roster lacked enough upperclassmen to safely field a competitive varsity squad.

The Reason: Low player numbers made matching up against varsity opponents an unacceptable injury risk.
The Plan: The Bulldogs will focus entirely on a junior varsity schedule to develop younger athletes.
